  Dalvir Gill Mr. Menon, It's the opening verse of a particular Renga that's a collaboration of Issa & Chodo. Not just it's a wish that only Priest Issa can make but it is The Aim of any haiku-poet,"To be like a child again". Kana comes, like most of the time, if the cut is at the end of the poem, at the end of the haiku. This translation is by David G. Lanoue, who does understands Japanese Aesthetic pretty well but at that time ( 1989-90 ) it wasn't paid due attention. Most of these poems with a cut at the end can be found confusing, but they are not. ਨਵੇਂ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਣ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਬੱਚਾ, ਸ਼ਾਲਾ! works for me as per my understanding of Haikai. But Shiki didn't like many of the poems even by Basho.
